The content of Refrigeration Plant Operator (RPO) Edition 4 follows the syllabus structure to prepare students to challenge the SOPEEC interprovincial Refrigeration Operator Certificate of Competency. This syllabus is shared with the Ontario Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) Refrigeration Operator Class B Operating Engineer Certification.

Book 4: Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC)

This book highlights the importance of maintaining consistent air temperature, cleanliness, and humidification for the comfort of people working or living in buildings such as office or apartment buildings.

The first unit in this book consists of five chapters, the first of which covers air conditioning. The second chapter describes the purpose and principles of humidification. The third chapter discusses fans for air distribution, and is followed by a chapter on ventilation and air filter types. The last chapter in this unit explains HVAC duct system classifications.

The second unit is about environmental systems. This unit also consists of five chapters and covers topics including air psychrometric properties and how to apply the psychometric chart. This unit guides you through cooling systems, exploring how heat gains and losses affect these systems, and describing the recovery methods used in the control of these systems. The Refrigeration Plant Support Systems book is divided into six units and will help you comprehend how secondary systems make the operation of the refrigeration plant possible.

The first unit presents fluid handling technology in two chapters, which provide a detailed look at piping and valves. The next unit discusses communications, plant maintenance, and administration. The third unit highlights welding processes and inspection. Next, the book covers electricity over three chapters and includes the basics of electricity, DC motor characteristics, and AC motor speed control. Another unit describes pumps and compressors, with two chapters on the various types of pumps and their operation and maintenance.
